JOLIE'S THOUGHTS BEHIND THE SONGS |
I'M COMING HOME TO YOU The key to any successful song is the hook and the melody. Those two things are what initially attracted me to “I’m Coming Home to You.” I just loved it the very first time I heard it. I also thought the title could have a lot of different meanings and really touch people on a number of levels. I mean, it could be significant to someone with a loved one who was off serving our country. I could imagine it playing as the troops arrive home and are being welcomed by their families and friends. I also thought it was a song people would catch onto quickly and enjoy singing along! BETTER OFF I got this song from Dale Dodson, who is a wonderful Nashville songwriter. I fell in love with it after the first verse and chorus. I could relate to the song on a personal level and that’s always good when you can tap into your own emotions and bring that to a song. I remember, it was the last song we recorded in the session, and I was saving it. Vocally it was a challenge, when I get to the higher octave, and I love conquering those kinds of challenges. I had to get mad and sing it like I meant it, and that is exactly what I did! I DON'T NEED CHAMPAGNE This song really describes me as a person and what’s important to me in a relationship. I don’t need champagne and all the expensive things so many women expect a man to provide. It really is about the little things. I love my flip flops, lemonade and front porch swing just like the song says. I really have to thank Butch Baker and Liz Morin for bringing this one to me because it describes me to a “T”. HARD TO BE A LADY I can’t wait to perform this song live. It has a really cool, bluesy feel to it that made it a lot of fun to record in the studio. It’s just a fun song to sing; so, many thanks to Jim Beavers for writing such a great tune. I'LL TRY ANYTHING What can I say? I love ballads with feeling. This song really says it all. We’ve all had our hearts broken at some time or another and we’ve all tried all the wrong ways to make us feel better and numb the pain if only for a little while. I was able to get rid of some old frustrations when I sang this song! I think everyone out there is going to be able to find a little bit of themselves in this one. NO THANKS No Thanks is just a good, old fashioned country song! It takes me back to the music I grew up listening to and loving like Charlie Rich, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, and Tammy Wynette to name a few. Everyone says I have an old soul and this song just plugs right into it! The message and hook are timeless. We’ve all been there, done that and have a bar tab to prove it! LET ME LOVE YOU Believe it or not, I have held onto this song since I was fifteen years old, just a few short years ago (yeah, right!) Anyway, it’s my mom’s favorite. I demoed it in Fort Worth, Texas and have just always kept it in the back of my mind. So, I finally decided to record it for this album, and I just hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. DRIVING TO HOLLYWOOD I actually co-wrote this song with my friend Ty “Cash” Thompson. The idea behind the song was actually to help promote my long time sponsor Chevrolet. As many of you know, I have been performing for Chevy for many years at events like NASCAR and The State Fair of Texas. I really wanted to do something special to thank them for all of their years of support and exposure they’ve given to me. So, go by a Chevy and pop my CD into the player! WHAT WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT After hearing this song for the first time in Roger Murrah’s office, I found myself humming the melody throughout the rest of the day. The song has so much feeling and truth to it. It also reminded me of some great old Tanya Tucker songs. It really took me back to my roots. No one could belt out a ballad like Tanya. It was a great song to sing in the studio for me. I got this one done in one take! I love it when that happens (-: LUCKY ENOUGH I have to thank Bill Anderson and Victoria Banks for this one. I met Bill a few years ago at the Grand Ole Opry. We became friends and stayed in touch over the years. So, when I started looking for tunes for this new CD, he sent me this one, and I loved it. It was happy, fun, and had a positive outlook. For those who don't know I was born on St. Patricks Day; so, I am a big believer in luck, shamrocks, and finding that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. As you can see not only did I record the song, but it is also the title of my album. We are all Lucky Enough!! Thank you Whispering Bill! |
